Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia signed a contract on Wednesday to buy 18 CRJ 1000 Next Gen aircraft from Canada-based Bombardier Aerospace at the Singapore Airshow in Changi.

The contract was signed by Garuda president director Emirsyah Satar and Bombardier president and COO Guy Hachev. Garuda has the option to buy a further 18 aircraft, the flag carrier said in a media statement.

Garuda will take delivery of five airplanes between October and December 2012.
The purchase of the CRJ 1000 NextGen is aimed at supporting Garuda’s development and expansion plans especially on high-density, short-range domestic and regional routes.

Garuda will be using the planes to serve its regional hubs in Balikpapan, Makassar and Medan by the end of this year.

“The aircraft will operate through Makassar, Medan and Balikpapan to increase the connectivity of towns around these three hubs and strengthen Garuda Indonesia’s overall network,” Emir said in the statement.

“Furthermore, the aircraft will increase Garuda’s efficiency because they are up to 30 percent more fuel-efficient.”

Meanwhile, Hachev said Bombardier was delighted to support and cooperate with Garuda.
“CRJ 1000 NextGen is one of Bombardier’s most reliable and environmentally-friendly products with very efficient operational costs,” he said.

The airplane was first marketed in 2010 and can carry up to 100 passengers.
