Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) firm PT GMF AeroAsia signed Friday a contract to maintain MD-83 narrowbody airplanes operatd by United Airways at the Singapore Airshow in Changi Exhibition Center.

The contract was signed by GMF EVP corporate development and marketing Agus Sulistyono and United Airways managing director Capt. Tasbirun A Choundhury, GMF said in a media statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Friday.

The Bangladeshi airline is based in Uttara Thana, Dhaka, and also operates Dash 8-100 twin turboprops and Airbus A310 widebody aircraft in addition to MD-83.

Agus said the contract with United Airways added the number of contracts GMF had signed during the airshow.

“There have been quite a good number of customers originating from South Asia. Our market penetration in the region is due to our capabilities,” he said.

He added that South Assia was a challenging MRO market for GMF.

“A number of airlines in India operate a large number of airplanes,” he said.

“The position of Bangladesh and India is quite strategic for GMF to develop our market in the region. These countries can become the gateway.”
