Garuda to start Australia-Jakarta-London Kangaroo Route in November

Garuda Indonesia will launch its own take on the Kangaroo Route between Australia and London, with a stopover in Jakarta, in November this year.

Flights will commence on November 2nd and are now open for bookings.

Garuda's brand new Boeing 777-300ER jet – featuring First, Executive business class and economy class – will run five times a week on the Sydney-Jakarta leg.

There will also be four connecting flights each week out of Melbourne, and five from Perth.

To streamline the connections at Jakarta, Garuda is also changing the timetable for Sydney, Melbourne and Perth flights.

Travellers from Sydney will see the shortest stopover at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (airport code CGK), at just over 1.5 hours.

That stretches to 2 hours if you're heading up from Melbourne, and almost 3.5 hours from Perth.

Brisbanites are in for a long wait, as Garuda doesn't offer direct flights to Jakarta. Your journey will stop at Denpasar, and after three hours you'll be off to Jakarta, only to face eight hours waiting for the daily London service.

It's no stretch to suggest that most Brisbane travellers will either hop a domestic flight to Sydney and join the direct-to-Jakarta flight, or give Garuda a miss entirely.

"The launch of direct flights from Jakarta to London is an incredibly exciting venture for Garuda Indonesia, and with our new 777 aircraft, we are offering our passengers a premium aircraft together with our award-winning Garuda Indonesia Experience" said Bagus Y. Siregar, Vice President for Garuda Indonesia Australia.

"From November, passengers will leave Australia in the evening and relax through the night, before arriving in London in the morning.”

Garuda's Jakarta-London flights will use on a Boeing 777-300ER, which will be equipped with inflight Internet and an on-board chef to keep first class passengers well fed and watered on the journey's longer leg.

The London end of the route is anchored at Gatwick rather than Heathrow.

The city's smaller second airport is not only less crowded than Heathrow but can be more convenient for business travellers, especially if you're heading for the eastern side of London, with direct trains to the city's financial hub and faster connections on to Docklands.

Updates to Gatwick include new lounges, premium fast-track security and increasingly upmarket restaurants in the departures hall (Jamie Oliver's Italian place is well worth a stop).

Garuda Plans Sydney-London Route Via Jakarta in Fourth Quarter

PT Garuda Indonesia (GIAA) will start a Sydney-to-London via Jakarta service in the fourth quarter that will compete with Singapore Airlines Ltd., Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN) and Emirates Airline.

Garuda will use two Boeing Co. (BA) 777 aircraft to service the route, which will generate yields at least “on par” with competitors, President and Chief Executive officer Emirsyah Satar said.

“The plane will fly from Sydney to Jakarta and then London, Satar said in an interview today. “We have an advantage over the others as the passenger will stay on the same aircraft all the way there.
Passengers from other cities like Melbourne or Perth can make a connection in Jakarta to London.”

Garuda will take delivery of 24 aircraft this year and phase out seven, which will bring down the average age of its fleet to four years by the end of 2013, Satar said in interview with Bloomberg Television’s Rishaad Salamat.

The national flag carrier plans to expand into five European cities this year, and expects to return to the U.S. by 2015, flying to West Coast cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Garuda is planning to add London, Paris, Rome and either Frankfurt or Munich to the list of its European destinations, Satar said. The airline currently flies to Amsterdam.

Garuda goes 777-300ER Sydney-Jakarta-London

PR graphic of a Garuda liveried Boeing 777-300ER
Any doubts as to Garuda’s interest in returning to the kangaroo routes between Australia and London have vanished after today’s announcement of revised Australian schedules to make such flights via Jakarta more practicable.

This is the Garuda statement:
Garuda Indonesia, the airline of Indonesia, has announced its newly introduced flights to London are now on sale via the airline’s website and reservations team and through its partner travel agents.
From 2nd November 2013, flights will depart from Sydney five times a week on the airline’s new Boeing 777-300 aircraft, accommodating 314 passengers across First, Executive and Economy Class. Connecting flights from Melbourne will fly four times weekly, and from Perth five times weekly. Garuda Indonesia has also updated flight schedules from the airline’s three Australian hubs; Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, to offer more convenient onward flight for Australian passengers, with stopovers in Jakarta exceeding no more than 3.5 hours.
Commenting on the announcement, Bagus Y. Siregar, Vice President for Garuda Indonesia Australia and SWP said: “The launch of direct flights from Jakarta to London is an incredibly exciting venture for Garuda Indonesia, and with our new 777 aircraft, we are offering our passengers a premium aircraft together with our award-winning Garuda Indonesia Experience.
“To make our customers’ busy lives even easier, we’ve updated our flights departing Australia so that we’re able to offer an exceptionally convenient option for travel to one of Europe’s major hubs, London. From November, passengers will leave Australia in the evening and relax through the night, before arriving in London in the morning.”
Garuda is due to take delivery of the first of 10 Boeing 777-300ERs from June, and in previous announcements said that they would be dedicated to its longest range routes to Europe and the US.

The airline gave up pitching for the Australia-Europe routes in the early 90s, when the policy setting for its flag carrier changed to one of emphasising Indonesia rather than discount flights for rich Aussie backpackers going to Amsterdam or London on services operated by older model 747s.

That decision also occurred during an incredibly intense period of discounting in the Australia-Europe market that saw Qantas lift its share of the trade toward the end of its history as a government owned carrier,  without significantly improving its dismal earnings as an entirely wide-body equipped international operator.

That prolonged fare war saw off Aeroflot among other carriers, and preceded the exit of Air France, KLM Royal Dutch and Lufthansa, creating a vacuum in services on continental European routes that eventually attracted Emirates into the Australia market when that carrier was in its early years.

It is intriguing to see Garuda stake a claim for through traffic to Europe once more now that Qantas has abandoned its last continental European service to Frankfurt and reduced its daily flights between Australia and London to single A380s each way to London from both Sydney and Melbourne, via Dubai, the global hub of its new business partner Emirates.

The Qantas-Emirates ‘deal’ gifts former Qantas customers to Europe from Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth to Emirates but may well drive them to alternatives such as those offered from November by Garuda.

Garuda plans Osaka-Jakarta flights amid soaring interest in Indonesia

Garuda Indonesia will begin offering flights between Osaka and Jakarta in October as part of its international expansion strategy, the chief of the nation’s flagship carrier said.

“Japan is one of the focuses that we would like to bring Indonesians,” said Garuda President and CEO Emirsyah Satar said Friday at a Tokyo news conference, ahead of the first anniversary of its service between Tokyo’s Haneda airport and Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, on April 28.

The new route from Kansai International Airport in Osaka will give western Japan access to Jakarta with four flights a week, according to Satar. Garuda already serves the city with daily flights from Narita airport.

As well as Haneda, the airline also provides flights to Bali from Narita and Kansai international airports. Satar said Garuda is planning to increase its global destinations to 22 from 19.

Indonesian tourists to Japan surged 64.1 percent in 2012, surpassing 100,000 for the first time, the airline said. The dramatic jump was credited to Indonesia’s rapid economic growth of 6.2 percent last year and the launch of the Haneda-Denpasar route.

In an interview with The Japan Times, Satar said he expects more of his compatriots to flock to Japan, which he described as “one of the so-called chosen places for Indonesians.”

He said Japan’s culture and food are the main attractions, but also cited the nation’s cyclist-friendly populace, which has had a big impact. Cycling is a popular sport in Indonesia, especially among the wealthy.

“What is effective in Indonesia is word of mouth. That’s why we brought this group of cyclists,” Satar said, referring to a cycling tour the firm has organized with Yamanashi Prefecture for Sunday and Monday. Around 30 Indonesians are expected to take part and another tour is scheduled for later this month.

“When cyclists travel, they travel in big numbers, at least 20 or 30″ in a group, Satar said, adding that Garuda set up the tour because “cyclists are people who can spend money — they want to spend money.”

Another cycling tour planned in Ehime Prefecture this fall will attempt to build on the October launch of the Kansai-Jakarta route.
