Minor cracks located in the wing of a Qantas A380 and a small number of Singapore Airlines’ superjumbo aircraft are nothing to be concerned about, the Australian flag carrier said.
Fractures less than a centimetre long found in the wing of the Qantas A380 being repaired in Singapore require “no immediate action” according to the carrier’s spokesperson, as they pose no threat to passenger and flight safety, Nine News reported.
Although they were found in the same A380 that was forced to make an emergency landing in November last year, the carrier said the cracks were unrelated.
Inspecting the rest of its fleet for similar damages, the carrier added that looking at future safety Airbus is examining the addition of new annual requirements to avoid future damages.
"Formal guidance is being developed by Airbus that is likely to require A380 operators to inspect wing ribs for this type of cracking every four years," Qantas said in a statement to media.
Singapore Airlines also confirmed to media that they had found small cracks in its A380s during the second half of 2011.
