National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia says it will strengthen its
European market this year by adding a Jakarta-Amsterdam flight and
entering five major cities on the continent through a codeshare
agreement with gulf airline Etihad Airways.
Garuda marketing vice president Elisa Lumbantoruan said that the airline would intensify its Jakarta-Amsterdam flight via Abu Dhabi to six times from four times a week starting on June 21.
The airline will also offer services to Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Milan and Munich this month.
“Europe remains an important market for Garuda and we see an increasing demand from our customers to and from Europe lately. This service is an answer to the demand and we believe this market will benefit Garuda and the passengers,” Elisa told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
He said that the Jakarta–Amsterdam route would be provided by Garuda Indonesia with an Airbus A330-200 with a capacity of 222 passengers while other flights would be provided by Etihad Airways through Abu Dhabi International Airport.
“This expansion is expected to help increase our business by 22 percent by the end of this year,” he said.
In March last year, the airline slashed its Amsterdam service from seven to four times a week due to the economic downturn in Europe that had affected its customers.
But, he said the demand for the service grew with its passenger load factor reaching around 80 percent on average.
He also said that under the agreement with Etihad, Garuda would be able to extend its services to more than 80 destinations in 50 countries served by the gulf carrier.
Currently, Garuda serves 32 domestic and 18 international destinations with 105 aircraft.
After the five European cities, the airline is set to enter more cities including Athens, Dublin, Geneva, Manchester, Muscat and Moscow this year, he said.
“This new connection will also benefit European passengers who want to go to Australia and other Asian countries because the codeshare agreement allows us to extend Etihad services to the [Asian and Australian] destinations that we’re serving,” he went on.
Besides more frequency on the Jakarta–Amsterdam route and the codeshare agreement, he said that Garuda was going to link the capital city with London, UK, in October this year.
The carrier chose Gatwick Airport to operate the direct flight service, making Gatwick the only UK airport to link passengers directly to Jakarta.
They would fly a brand new Boeing B777-300 Extended Range plane that could carry over 300 passengers, between Indonesia and the UK six times a week.
The new plane is expected to arrive in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in September.
