CZ plans greater efforts in Aus

CHINA-China Southern Airlines will make ”greater efforts on its kangaroo routes”, according to the carrier’s chief operating officer Tan Wan’geng, seeing the region as key to its network expansion plans.

Speaking at the company’s annual corporate conference held in the Gold Coast yesterday, Mr Tan explained the airline has developed plans to become a “truly network-oriented airline” and said flights to Australia would make the “Guangzhou hub an important gateway hub into China and even into the Asia-Pacific region as well as an ideal transfer centre between Australia and Europe”.

Experiencing a 114.1 percent increase in passenger between mainland China to Australia and New Zealand during January and November 2011 compared to the same period last year, Mr explained the carrier had become the largest airline between the region and China.

He said as a result of that growth the carrier’s Australia Strategy was even more important for its “integration into the international marketplace” which will see the carrier commence flights into Heathrow, London next June as well as increase capacity to Paris, Amsterdam and Vancouver.

“China Southern Airlines has received generous coordination and support from the Australian government, tourism bureau, airports and all sectors of the society as we further introduce ourselves to the Australian business and leisure communities,” he said.

“China Southern’s commitment to Australia remains very strong, as demonstrated by the fact that we are the airline sponsor for next month’s Sydney Festival.”

In total, the carrier’s head operating officer said the airline has forecasted a passenger count of up to 80 million travellers for this year, with the majority flying on its domestic routes.

For the first time in the company’s history, China Southern held its annual conference outside of China, selecting the Gold Coast as the meeting’s destination.

Made possible through the work of Gold Coast Tourism, Gold Coast Airport and Tourism Queensland, the Group will also get the opportunity to experience some of the region’s key attractions including famous beaches, hinterland, resorts, theme parks and golf courses.

Gold Coast Tourism chief executive Martin Winter said hosting the delegation was step towards the sustainability of the region’s $4.5 billion tourism industry.

“It is a demonstration of the strong relations between the Gold Coast and China Southern Airlines, and an indication of the considerable reputation the destination has within the China market,” Mr Winter said.

“The delegation of airline executives, corporate heavyweights, and industry influencers will not only experience our world-class destination first hand, they will meet the operators and stakeholders who make it Australia’s most successful tourism industry.

“Valuable commercial partnerships and influential personal relationships will be formed.”
