The Indonesian government wants to obtain the license needed for direct
flights to the United States, Deputy Minister of Transportation Bambang
Susantono said on Monday.
Speaking in Denpasar, Bali, Bambang was quoted by state news agency Antara saying the government was hoping to obtain the license by 2013.
“When the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2013 takes place, Indonesia is expected to already have a license for direct flights to the United States,” he said.
He said a team from the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) is scheduled to visit Indonesia in September to inspect the country’s aviation facilities, infrastructure and human resources.
The minister expressed hope that the validation process would have a positive result, so Indonesia would have the opportunity to open direct flights to the US.
Indonesia currently does not have any direct flights to the United States, travelers must transit through another country.
