Chicago-based Boeing Co. said it finalized an order for 60 737 Max airplanes, bringing its order total to more than 1,000.
The order is worth $6 billion at current list prices, although discounts are typical on large orders.
The next-generation 737 is the most
fuel-efficient and reliable single-aisle airplane today with an 8
percent per-seat operating cost advantage over the nearest competitor,
Boeing says.
“Reaching 1,000 orders in just over a
year’s time from our first order validates the exceptional value the 737
Max offers our customers,” said Bob Feldmann, vie president and general
manager, 737 MAX at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
The 737 is a workhorse of the world’s
airlines. Boeing decided in 2011 to make an updated version, the Max,
with a new engine and other tweaks aimed at making the plane more fuel
efficient. The first ones are expected to be delivered in 2017.
Boeing said it has received orders for 1,029 737 MAX airplanes from airlines and leasing companies.
Aviation Capital Group also has ordered 30 A320neos, a competing plane, from Boeing’s European rival Airbus.
Shares of Boeing closed at $77.07, up 2.3 percent.
