MEDAN - Kuala Namu International Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, is set to begin operations before September.
State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II president director Tri Sunoko said that Kuala Namu airport would be ten times larger than the city's current airport, Polonia International Airport, and could serve up to 10 million passengers a year.
Kuala Namu airport, which is located in Deli Serdang, about 14 kilometers from Medan, features a 3,750-meter runway and 33 aprons that can accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and A380 and the Boeing B747.
Angkasa Pura II marketing chief Ferry Utama, said separately that trains would carry up to 200 people between Lapangan Merdeka station in downtown Medan and the airport.
"We will use electronic cards for ticketing. We will also provide designated seat numbers so all passengers can sit comfortably," he told The Jakarta Post Travel on Wednesday.
Expected to serve as the main gateway for resource-rich Sumatra, the airport will feature up to 100 modern check-in counters, with a faster and safer baggage handling system, making it the first airport in Indonesia to do so.
