State airport operator Angkasa Pura II broke ground on Thursday on the
expansion project of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in
Tangerang, which aims to boost passenger capacity to 62 million people,
or three times the current figure.
The airport’s current three terminals have a combined capacity of just 22 million passengers per year, even though they handled 51.5 million people last year.
“Soekarno-Hatta Airport currently ranks 12th in the world’s most crowded airports, with the [passenger] growth reaching 19.2 percent in 2011,” Angkasa Pura II Managing Director Tri Sunoko said in Tangerang on Thursday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the airport expansion, which was attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Tri explained that the expansion work was expected to boost the capacity of Terminal 1 from the current nine million passengers a year to 18 million per year by 2014, Terminal 2 from nine million to 19 million passengers a year and Terminal 3 from four million to 25 million passengers a year.
He said development work would first take place at Terminal 3, so as to not disrupt operations at the two other terminals.
“And then all operations will be diverted to Terminal 3 while expansion work is done at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2,” Tri said.
He added the runways were expected to serve up to 234 airplanes per hour upon the completion of the expansion work, which was scheduled for the end of 2013, although he did not mention the current figure.
“As for the parking capacity, it will increase from 125 airplanes at the moment to 174 airplanes, [which] we will enable by building additional aprons,” Tri said.
He added that some construction work had already begun, including expansion of main road access to the terminals, the construction of additional aprons and the expansion of boarding lounges in Terminal 1.
Tri also added that the airport was also still in the process of acquiring some of the 830 hectares of land required for the expansion plan.
