American Airlines (AA) said it will install the same locking device
to the seats on 49 of its Boeing 767s as was installed on 48 757s after
recent incidents in which economy seats became loose during flights.
In a late Friday memo to employees, AA said it determined that the 49 767s “have the same primary locking device that was found on 48 of our 757s” (ATW Daily News, Oct. 5). It stressed the work on the 767s is “precautionary” and there have been no inflight 767 incidents similar to those on the 757s.
In contrast to the 757 work, no 767 flights will be cancelled, AA said. The 767 work is expected to be completed by Oct. 21. US FAA has approved the plan, AA noted. “After a complete inspection, none of our other fleet types have this same type of primary locking device,” the airline said.
