Kuala Namu International Airport, designated to replace Polonia
Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, is set begin operating this month, a
minister has said.
“We will begin the ‘shadow operation’ this month,” Transportation Minister E E Mangindaan said at his office on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.
During the shadow operation the government is to review the airport’s processes and pick up on any flaws within the next two months before the airport is announced to be fully operational.
Separately, Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susantono said that railway facilities supporting the airport will be ready in March to coincide with when the new airport will be fully operational.
State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II, which is cooperating with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation, stated that Kuala Namu would be a transit airport supporting Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Passengers will also be able to fly directly from Kuala Namu to Incheon Airport, to connect to other destinations.
Kuala Namu Airport is situated in the former area of state-owned plantation firm PT Perkebunan Nusantara II Tanjung Morawa in Kuala Namu, Beringin village, Deli Serdang regency. It is designed to replace the 70-year-old Polonia Airport, which has been operating beyond capacity. It will be the second largest airport in Indonesia after Soekarno Hatta Airport.
