A Garuda Indonesia flight skidded off the runway at Pekanbaru, Riau’s
Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport as it landed in heavy rains Tuesday
afternoon, an official said.
The airport ceased operations for hours Tuesday afternoon as crews and military personnel worked to evacuate the Boeing 737-800, general manager Anggono Laras said Tuesday evening.
“We’re still trying to evacuate the plane and have to temporarily cease flights until next announcement,” Anggono said.
Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya was among the passengers aboard the flight, which departed from Jakarta.
The plane skidded off the runway at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured.
The accident caused at least four flights to be diverted from Pekanbaru to neighboring airports, Anggono said.
