Indonesia green lights Russia's Sukhoi jet to fly

Indonesia has certified a Russian-made passenger jetliner as safe to fly in the country six months after the same model crashed into a volcano during a demonstration flight, an official said Wednesday.

The Sukhoi Superjet-100 was deemed airworthy last week by the country's general directorate of civil aviation, said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan.

The certification was based on a thorough validation process and has nothing to do with the crash investigation that's still ongoing, he said.

"It was granted after a careful validation process, which found the type has met all required standards," Ervan said.

In May, a Sukhoi Superjet-100 crashed into Mount Salak, a dormant Indonesian volcano, during a demonstration flight to impress potential buyers, killing all 45 people aboard.

Masruri, head of the Air Transportation Safety Division, said the investigation into the crash has been completed and the results are expected to be announced as soon as next month. He declined to provide any additional details. Like many Indonesians, he uses only one name.

Meanwhile, Sunaryo, an official from Sukhoi's representative office in Indonesia, PT Trimarga Rekatama, said the certification will allow delivery of the aircraft to its first customer in Southeast Asia, the Indonesian airline Sky Aviation, which has signed a deal for 12 planes.

He added that the first delivery is expected to arrive before the end of the year.

Another Indonesian company, Kartika Airlines, also ordered 30 aircraft, but the fate of that deal is not clear following the crash, Sunaryo said.

The Superjet is Russia's first new model of passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago and is intended to help resurrect its aerospace industry.

Airbus pushes enhanced A330 against 787-9

Airbus believes its proposed higher-weight and fuel-capacity modifications to the A330-300 will offer certain competitive advantages over the Boeing 787-9.

The A330-300 is built with the same centre tank structure as the longer-range A330-200 but is unused.

Airbus will modify the aircraft on the production line by sealing the centre section, making the volume available for fuel transport.

It will also install associated pumps as well as the inerting system required by US and European regulators.

Airbus expects the increased fuel capacity, combined with planned aerodynamic tweaks, to bring the maximum take-off weight to 242t and increase the range of the A330-300 by 500nm (930km) to 6,100nm.

It claims that while the 787-9's cash operating costs per seat would be 6% lower its direct operating cost per seat will be 7% higher than the 242t A330-300's. Boeing gives the range of the 787-9 at 8,000-8,500nm.

Airbus is also positioning the type as a Boeing 777-200ER replacement, claiming the aircraft will increase its proportion of network coverage from 85% to 94% of the -200ER's. Over 400 -200ERs, which have a range of 7,725nm, have been delivered since the first in 1991.

Airbus to raise A330 take-off weight and fuel capacity

Airbus is further hiking the maximum take-off weight of the A330, raising it to 242t, and will offer a higher fuel capacity option for the larger A330-300 variant.
The airframer had previously disclosed plans to increase the twinjet's take-off weight to 240t.
Airbus's latest enhancements will extend the range of the A330-300 by 500nm (930km) over the 235t model, and by 350nm for the 238t A330-200 at full passenger load.

It will give operators of the -300 the option of activating the centre wing fuel tank, a standard feature on the longer-range -200 but one which has remained unused on the larger aircraft.

This will increase the -300's fuel capacity from 97,500 litres to more than 139,000 litres. The modification will include tank inerting.

Airbus hopes the improvements will extend the A330-300's range to 6,100nm by 2015, enabling it to perform westbound flights from south-east Asia to Europe.

A330 programme chief Patrick Piedrafita says the airframer has "taken it as our duty" to maximise the capability of the twinjet.

Airbus took gross orders for 76 of the type over the first 10 months of this year, and delivered 80 - including six freighters - over the same period.

"We are currently delivering more A330s per month than ever before, and this is set to continue," adds Piedrafita.

Airbus's formal technical documentation for the A330 lists 21 weight variants for both the -200 and -300. The new weight increase and fuel-capacity improvements will become available to carriers in 2015.

The airframer is aiming to achieve the enhancements by refining the A330's aerodynamics - shortening flap-track fairings and reshaping inner slats - and capitalising on the aircraft's load-alleviation function. The aircraft will also undergo partial wing and fuselage reinforcement.

Airbus expects to reduce the -300's fuel burn by 2%, half of which will derive from the aerodynamic tweaks and the rest from higher engine efficiency.

No customer for the 242t variant has been disclosed but lessor CIT had signed up to take the 240t version shortly after it was unveiled in July this year.

United receives third Boeing 787

United Airlines has received its third Boeing 787-8 from the manufacturer, with two more due before the end of the year.

The aircraft is registered N26902 (MSN 34822) and was delivered to the Chicago-based Star Alliance member on 21 November, according to Flightglobal's Ascend Online database.

The Dreamliner will begin revenue flights on domestic routes in early December, according to an employee newsletter.

United flies the 787 between Houston Intercontinental and both Chicago O'Hare and Los Angeles. International flights will begin on 3 January 2013 with service between Los Angeles and Tokyo Narita.

The airline anticipates that it will receive two more 787s by the end of the year, it says in the newsletter.

United has 50 787-8s on order.

Airbus & Boeing Bersaing, PTDI Dapat Berkah

Airbus mewakili konsorsium industri penerbangan Eropa sedangkan Boeing representasi kekuatan industri penerbangan Amerika Serikat.

Habibie: N250 is Still The Best

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Mantan Presiden RI, BJ Habibie mengatakan pesawat N250 yang proyeknya sempat terhenti di tengah jalan merupakan salah satu pesawat terbaik.

"N250 is still the best," kata Habibie di sela-sela Open House menyambut Hari Raya Idul Fitri 1433 Hijriah di kediamannya di Jalan Patra Kuningan XIII, Jakarta, Ahad (19/8).

Habibie mendirikan PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI).

PT DI Bidik Pasar Pesawat Terbang Afrika

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero) menjadikan Afrika sasaran pasar ekspor produk-produknya.

Windu menjelaskan, sejak 2007 sejumlah pesawat CN235 produk PT DI mulai masuk benua Afrika.
