GenCorp to keep intended acquisition Rocketdyne separate from Aerojet

GenCorp says it will keep Rocketdyne, which it intends to purchase from Pratt & Whitney in a $550 million deal, separate from its existing Aerojet rocket manufacturing operation, despite some duplication of capabilities between the two.

Although Aerojet and Rocketdyne work within the same small field, the companies rarely compete directly.
"There is less than 10% overlap between the two companies," says a senior Aerojet executive, who requested anonymity citing ongoing negotiations. "The first blush for people is that we're tooth-and-nail competitors, but the truth is we seldom compete on any R&D work."

One exception is the advanced SLS booster competition, in which both Rocketdyne and Aerojet proposals were selected for further study. GenCorp has yet to decide whether to support Rocketdyne's reborn F-1 or Aerojet's concept booster - or both.

"We have a lot of experience being in an inverted supply chain where typically we find ourselves occasionally, because of our technology, supporting multiple primes. We're very agile and able in supporting firewalls," says the executive. "There are lots of options there, we'll listen to the voice of the customer."

GenCorp chief executive officer Scott Seymour adds: "This transaction almost doubles the size of our company and provides additional growth opportunities as we build upon the complementary capabilities of each legacy company that has enabled a generation of human space travel and national security launch services." GenCorp expects to complete the acquisition process by mid-2013.

The sale will be financed by cash and debt issuance, says GenCorp. The long-rumoured sale comes seven years after P&W purchased the company from Boeing for $700 million.

Airbus reveals latest A350 developments

Airbus has revealed that its first cabin-fitted A350-900 development aircraft will be configured with 252 seats in two classes.

Five development aircraft are being constructed for the programme and two of them will have an interior cabin fit.

A350 programme head Didier Evrard showed that aircraft MSN2 would be equipped with 42 business-class seats in a 1-2-1 layout.

It would also be configured with 210 economy-class seats, nine-abreast, in a 3-3-3 layout.
The second cabin-fitted example will be MSN5.

Airbus's first static example has been wheeled out at Toulouse as a full nose-to-tail fuselage, and Evrard says that attention is turning to transferring the first flight-test aircraft, MSN1, to the final assembly line.

The airframer still has to "de-risk the wing and the junction of the wing", he states, but says results from the static airframe fuselage join have proven promising.

Evrard says MSN1 is "on track" and the first flight will be "close to the middle of next year", as the airframer bids to keep entry into service to the first half of 2014 - although Evrard says that service entry will be "closer to the middle of 2014 than to the beginning".

The company accepted the first set of doors for MSN1 on 23 May. Upper and lower wing-cover drilling for the aircraft has started at the UK's Broughton plant. Evrard admits that progress on the wing is "a little bit handicapped" by the learning process for the new drilling system, but he says it will allow the company to achieve the production rates needed for the A350 line.

MSN1's horizontal stabiliser is "almost ready to ship" and will arrive at the final assembly line in June or July, he says, while equipment installation for MSN1 is "very well advanced".

A350 wing work delays service entry by three months

Airbus is pushing back the entry into service for the A350 twinjet by three months to the second half of 2014.

It has shifted the schedule as a result of longer time being taken to implement an automated drilling process for the aircraft's wings.

Parent company EADS is booking a €124 million ($152 million) charge against the delay.

EADS has confirmed the three-month shift in the schedule in its first-half financial results, and adds that any further delay to the "challenging" A350 programme "would lead to higher rates of charges".

New chief executive Tom Enders says: "Our key programmes, particularly at Airbus, continue to command our utmost attention.

"On A350 especially, maturity of sections delivered to the final assembly is of key importance to us as we prepare for a robust production ramp-up."

EADS has accounted for the charge in Airbus's first-half commercial earnings which more than doubled to €548 million.

FARNBOROUGH: Airbus wrestles with A350 wing drilling

Airbus is aiming to deliver the wing for the first flying A350-900 to the final assembly line in October, but is still assessing whether additional cautiousness over the manufacturing process will push back the maiden flight.

A350 programme chief Didier Evrard had stated in May that the airframer was making slower-than-expected progress on the wing drilling at its Broughton plant in the UK.

Experience with the highly-automated drilling - crucial to the production ramp-up - was taking time to accumulate and Airbus chief executive Fabrice Bregier said, during the Farnborough air show, that the airframer had resorted to manual drilling in places because it wanted to be "over-cautious" on the critical structure.

He points out that size of the 32m (105ft) composite panel means the company can ill-afford errors in drilling. "It takes a long time to make another," he says.

Bregier says the airframer has yet to determine whether this conservative approach will have an effect on the first flight schedule for MSN1.

"The most critical phase is now behind us," he says, although he adds that he would "never exclude" a "slight adaptation" of the programme - pointing out that Airbus is sticking rigorously to its aim of prioritising component maturity over the timetable.

He says that the airframer will complete a "virtual" first flight with the A350 by the end of this year, which will then give it "more confidence" on the maiden flight, which it has been planning to conduct in mid-2013.

Airbus overcoming A350 wing-drill automation snags

Airbus admits the slow pace of automated wing-drilling on the A350-900 forced the latest schedule slip to service entry, but the airframer believes it is overcoming the problem and aims to minimise the impact on the maiden flight.

A350 programme chief Didier Evrard tells Flightglobal that, in addition to the airframer's having to resort to manual drilling at its Broughton plant, the locking of jigs while the automation issue was addressed has had a knock-on effect on subsequent wing sets.

"The robot was not working properly, the software was not optimised," he says, and the drilling "took much more time".

The domino effect on production of the prototype fleet left "not enough margin to catch up", he adds, and led Airbus to push back entry into service to the second half of 2014.

Airbus has adopted a concept in which it builds the wings horizontally and the Broughton facility is able to assemble three sets of wings in parallel.

The plant is currently handling the wings for the static airframe, MSN5000, as well as those for the first flying aircraft, MSN1, plus a test wing designated 'EW' being built to accelerate testing through a separate damage-tolerance exercise.

Broughton will probably ship these to their various stations - the MSN1 wing to Bremen for high-lift system work, and the MSN5000 wings to the final assembly line in Toulouse - around the same time, August-September.

Drilling on the EW test wing, bound for a rig in Germany, shows that the automation issue is becoming manageable, says Evrard. "For the next sets of wings we won't have the same problem," he says. "We've already tested the new [drilling] software on one wing and it's much more efficient."

The next wings in the sequence will be those for MSN3.

While the wing production has proven difficult, Evrard says the airframer is making "good progress" on the other sections of MSN1.

Airbus started power-on work on 23 July. MSN1 is already equipped with electrical distribution and avionics systems and power-on tests will continue through August, ahead of the next main sections which will arrive in September and Evrard says the MSN1 fuselage will be assembled in October.

"We have a good grip on the first flying aircraft," he says. Evrard believes that, despite the wing-drilling problem, the airframer will be able to claw back some of the time in order to reduce delays to first flight - still intended for mid-2013.

"Today, I think that we can catch up," he says. But he reiterates that Airbus's strategy with the A350 is to ensure maturity of components at each crucial stage, to avoid out-of-sequence work on the final assembly line.

The engine flight-test programme entered a second phase on 26 July using an upgraded Rolls-Royce Trent XWB powerplant. Evrard says that the first phase, involving over 70h of tests using the A380 testbed, generated "very good results".

"On the positive side there's good progress on the first sections of the aircraft," he says, including the complex section 15 centre fuselage, produced by Spirit AeroSystems, which had previously been a source of concern.

While Evrard "can't say everything is fully bridged" regarding the production process, he is confident that the section for MSN1 will be ready by the end of September.

Airbus's attention is focused on the first flight - preparing MSN1 and the static airframe in Toulouse, and performing virtual flights using simulation - as well as demonstrating the integrity of the manufacturing process and the readiness for the initial low rate of production.

After MSN1 and MSN3 the prototype assembly effort will turn to MSN2, the first cabin-equipped test aircraft. Another non-cabin aircraft, MSN4, will follow before the cabin-fitted MSN5 is assembled.

Pacific Aerospace prepares to break into Chinese market

New Zealand manufacturer Pacific Aerospace has appointed Xi'an Yanliang National Aviation Hi-tech Industrial Base (CAIB) as its partner and exclusive sales representative for the P-750 XSTOL in China as it seeks to break into the growing market in the Asian country.

Under the deal, CAIB has ordered five of the short take-off and landing, single-engined P-750 XSTOL aircraft.

Hamilton-based Pacific Aerospace has sold more than 80 P-750 XSTOLs, with type certification held in 16 countries. The 10-seat aircraft requires just 220m (720ft) to take off, carrying a useful load of 1,905kg (4,200lb), with a range of 2,183km (1,180nm). As a result, it is operating in the most demanding conditions in countries including Nepal, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, as well as in Africa, says the manufacturer.

Roles include freight, passenger, aerial survey, surveillance, medivac, agriculture and skydiving.

"With its safety record, exceptional performance and multi-functional roles, the P-750 XSTOL is ideal for the burgeoning GA market in China," says Jin Qiansheng, chairman of CAIB, which has developed an integrated aviation hub at Xi'an Yanliang, in Shanxi Province, providing a range of aviation products and services from aircraft manufacturing to pilot training.

Sukhoi delivers 10th Superjet, but output still lagging

Sukhoi delivered the 10th Superjet 100 on 28 July to Russian carrier Aeroflot, but output remains well below the planned rate for 2012.

The fourth SSJ100 delivered since 1 January is expected to fly from the Ulyanovsk final assembly facility to Moscow on 2 August, where Aeroflot can prepare the aircraft for entering service.

The 10th overall delivery was described by Sukhoi as a key milestone as the programme attempts to ramp up long-delayed deliveries.

"Our experience gained in the process of the aircraft acceptance by the airlines is definitely useful to facilitate the planned growth of the SSJ100 deliveries," Sukhoi Commercial Aircraft Company president Vladimir Prisyazhnyuk says in a statement.

But the rate of deliveries has not visibly improved in the second year of production. Sukhoi planned to deliver 15 SSJ100s in 2011, but handed over only six to two airlines. The company is now working to deliver 23 aircraft this year, but so far has delivered only four.

Some deliveries have been delayed by customer problems. Launch customer Armavia received their first aircraft a year ago, but the Armenian carrier was unable to take delivery of a second aircraft on 23 June.

Sukhoi also has struggled to keep the SSJ100 supply chain on pace. In June, the airframer convened a supplier summit to implore its suppliers to quicken the pace of component deliveries.

Citing possible doubts about the programme following the 9 May crash of the SSJ100 in Indonesia, Prisyazhnyuk told his suppliers that the ramp up is necessary to restore confidence in the programme.

LTQ Engineering to close Tullamarine facility

Australia's LTQ Engineering, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and Qantas Airways, will cease operations and close its Tullamarine, Melbourne facility in September.

August Wilhelm Henningsen, LTQ chairman and Lufthansa Technik chief executive, says falling demand due to improved engine reliability has "directly impacted the viability of the business".

"Simply put, LTQ does not have the scale of engine maintenance work to be competitive," he adds.

In May, Qantas announced that it plans to cut 500 jobs at its heavy maintenance and engineering divisions in Melbourne and Victoria, citing a 30% cost-base differential with its competitors.

Qantas grows A380 seat capacity by 7.5%

Qantas is increasing the passenger capacity of its Airbus A380 fleet with more economy class seats while the business class section is being cut back.

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) has completed the first of the airline's 12 A380s, which will all be sent to the Manila-based MRO provider for interior reconfiguration.

The number of business class seats in the forward part of the upper deck is being reduced from 72 in the existing layout to 64, while the number of economy class seats - which were thus far located on the main deck only - increased from 332 to 371.

The first class accommodation in the forward part of the main deck remains unchanged at 14 seats, while the number of premium economy seats - thus far in the rear part of the upper deck - grows slightly from 32 to 35 seats.

Total seat capacity of the A380 aircraft increases 7.5% from 450 to 484.

While most space was won on the upper deck, economy class - which has thus far been on the main deck - has seen the biggest increase. However, Qantas was not immediately available to specify the new seat allocation and clarify whether the cabins of other types will also be reconfigured.

LTP says it is the first MRO provider to change the cabin layout of an A380. The work is being combined with wing-rib inspections and necessary, temporary repairs.

The project comes about a year after the MRO company opened its A380 hangar. LTP says it is preparing base maintenance capability for A380s and wants to focus particularly on C checks.

Staff has undergone training at majority parent Lufthansa Technik and participated in C checks on A380 aircraft in Frankfurt, the company adds. However, engineers from Qantas and Airbus have also been seconded for the project to Manila.

Lap joints focus of new Boeing 777 directive: FAA

The US Federal Aviation Administration on 23 July will publish a final airworthiness directive (AD) requiring US operators of approximately 46 Boeing 777-200 and -300 series widebodies to perform repetitive inspections for cracks in the fuselage skin lap splices at several locations on the aircraft.

The AD resulted from reports of fatigue cracks in certain lap joints and inspection are directed at Sections 41, 43 and 44 of the aircraft, says the FAA, noting that Boeing issued a service bulletin to address the potential problem in November 2011.

Cracks were found to have started at scribe lines that were made during production "when maskant was removed from the affected skin panels during the chemical milling process," says the FAA.

"We are issuing this AD to detect and correct such fatigue cracking, which could grow large and cause sudden decompression and the inability to sustain limit flight and pressure loads."

The final AD calls for performing initial and repetitive inspections using external phased-array ultrasonic devices, though Boeing and the FAA have not stated publicly when the initial inspection must be completed.

The FAA does say however that damaged joints must be repaired before further flights and inspections on the joints must be performed at least every 4,200 flight cycles thereafter. The directive was first published as a proposed AD in February.

FAA last year issued a similar AD for Boeing 737NG models, requiring inspections to look for fatigue cracks related to scribe line damage adjacent to the skin lap joints, decals, and wing-to-body fairings.

Boeing clarifies 777 lap joint directive

Boeing says there have been no reports of lap joint fatigue cracks in sections 41, 43 and 44 of the in-service Boeing 777-200 and -300 fleet, though it agrees with a new US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airworthiness directive (AD) aimed at detecting potential cracks in those areas with repetitive ultrasonic inspections.

The FAA on 23 July finalised an AD that requires operators to perform the inspections on fuselage skin lap splices at 34,000 cycles and repeating every 4,200 additional cycles in an effort to identify cracks that could lead to sudden decompression in flight.

Boeing tells Flightglobal however that the cracks that spawned the AD were detected during full-scale fatigue testing of a 777 airframe at Boeing, not in the active fleet.

The airframer says the AD affects 104 airplanes in the global fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft. "More specifically, this is directed to 777-200 airplanes (line numbers 1-75) and 777-200 and 777-300 airplanes (line numbers 76-104). In the US, this potentially involves only 46 airplanes," says Boeing.

The company issued a service bulletin in November 2011 recommending the inspections. Under the FAA AD, the inspections will now be mandatory for US-registered aircraft.

Boeing says 34,000 cycles, the threshold for the initial inspection, represents about 30 years in service. "No operators have airplanes of that age yet," the airfamer says.

Embraer sees 10 E-190 cancellations in Q2

Brazilian airframer Embraer recorded 10 cancellations for Embraer 190 aircraft in the second quarter of 2012 ended 30 June, the manufacturer confirms.

The company says the cancellations reflect orders from more than one carrier but did not identify the specific operators.

As of 30 June, Embraer reported a firm backlog of 200 E-Jets, which reflects orders for the Embraer 170, 175, 190 and 195 models. E-190 orders comprise more than half of this backlog, with 122 aircraft.

The airframer has delivered 56 E-Jets so far in fiscal 2012, with 35 handed over in the last quarter.

According to Embraer, it plans to deliver between 105 and 110 E-Jets in 2012.

Embraer chief financial officer Jose Antonio Filippo told reporters on a media call today (31 July) that the company plans to keep producing its E-Jets at a rate that satisfies that number. "We are not working at this point in time [towards] a reduction in activities," Filippo says.

Total orders since the programme launched stood at 1,058 E-Jets as of 30 June, which includes a recent commitment from Chinese carrier Hebei Airlines for five E-190s.

WestJet to launch premium economy, add seats on 737-800s

Canada's WestJet plans to launch a premium economy product on its Boeing 737 fleet and add eight extra seats to each of its 737-800s in a move aimed at growing revenue at the low-cost carrier.

The airline's board approved the plan today, months after the airline's executives first disclosed that it was studying the proposal. The carrier is expected to announce the seat reconfiguration tomorrow when it announces its second quarter financial results.

WestJet currently operates 99 737s, comprising -600s, -700s and -800s. It will receive its 100th aircraft, a -800, in December.

The premium economy product, to be rolled out across all three 737 aircraft types, will involve reconfiguring four rows or 24 seats, WestJet chief executive Gregg Saretsky told Flightglobal in an interview earlier this month.

Simultaneously, the airline will add eight seats to each of its 737-800s, taking the number of seats on board to 174 from 166. Doing so will take the seat pitch down to 31 or 32 inches from 34 inches currently, which will bring the seat pitch in line with what is currently being offered on the airline's -600s and -700s.

WestJet currently has 17 737-800s in service, Flightglobal's Ascend database shows.

The airline expects to begin the seat reconfiguration in the fourth quarter, and hopes to complete it in the first quarter of 2013, said Saretsky. He estimated that the project's cost will be in the "multi-million" dollar range.

WestJet does not expect flight operations to be impacted by the seat reconfiguration, which will involve taking aircraft out of service. Saretsky said that the airline extended leases on three 737s that were to be returned in 2013 earlier this year, and that these three aircraft provide the airline flexibility to take some aircraft out of service for the seat changes.

He also pointed out that the fourth quarter is traditionally the airline's slowest quarter, making it the best time for the seat changes to be made.

Vueling on track for autumn narrowbody order

Low-cost carrier Vueling has reiterated that it will make a long-anticipated narrowbody order announcement by the end of the summer.

Chief executive officer Alex Cruz, speaking to analysts during a second quarter results call on 1 August, said: "Our project continues. We are in phase three of our evaluation."

"We are on track and we hope to make a decision after the summer, maybe in September or October, depending on the date of our board meeting."

The Barcelona-based airline has added 14 Airbus A320-family jets to its operation since the demise of Spanair earlier this year, taking its fleet to 55 A320s and three A319s. The majority of the new additions are on three-year operating leases.

Vueling will end the summer with a total fleet of 60 aircraft, but may need to renew its entire fleet beginning in 2015.

"We are pleased with data and proposals submitted by the three vendors [Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier] and we are still in the negotiation phase. It is an important project for Vueling," says Cruz.

In June chief financial officer Sonia Jerez told delegates at the Ascend London 2020 conference that production slots were not available before 2013.

FAA: Loss of separation but no head-on for DCA planes

US officials say two regional jets that departed Washington Reagan National airport the afternoon of 31 July were at no time on a head-on collision course with an inbound aircraft coming the opposite direction, countering earlier media reports about the incident.

"At no point were these planes on a head to head collision course," says US Department of Transportation secretary Ray LaHood. "There was a loss of separation - it shouldn't have happened. But a well-trained controller at the [Reagan National] tower immediately recognized the situation and worked quickly to fix it."

Acting Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta, during the 2 August press conference, said separation between two of the regional jets - an inbound Republic Airlines flight and an outbound Chautauqua airlines aircraft - should have been at least 3nm (5.6km) laterally and 1,000ft (305m) vertically. Instead the two aircraft came within 0.82nm laterally and 800ft vertically, says Huerta.

A second departing regional jet, Republic airlines flight 3467, came within 2.07nm laterally and 800ft vertically of the inbound Republic airlines aircraft.

"Two departing aircraft came within these [separation] margins in relation to a plane that was landing at DCA. But at no point were any of the planes headed directly for one another," says Huerta.

He says the problem related to "a miscommunication between a manager at the Potomac Tracon facility and two traffic management coordinators at the [Reagan National] tower".

LaHood says the FAA has launched a full investigation. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has said it will also investigate.

Air traffic controller audio and video from controllers' screens provided by the FAA reveal a frazzled tower controller and frustrated airline pilots during the mid-afternoon incident.

The situation unfolded when convective weather and wind required the airport to switch operations on the primary runway from a northbound arrival/departure procedure to a southbound procedure.

Indonesia's safety committee makes first recommendations after Sukhoi crash

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) has issued some immediate recommendations to how demonstration flights should be conducted while investigations into the May crash of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 continue.

To address the safety issues that were identified, the NTSC is recommending that Indonesia's directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) ensure that all aircraft on demonstration flights operate within a "published minimum safe flight altitude".

It also wants Sukhoi to review its procedures for the preparation and operation of demonstration flights and if needed, make the appropriate changes.

NTSC is also recommending that the manufacturer arrange additional training for crew who will be conducting demonstration flights, especially for those operated in mountainous regions.

The DGCA and Sukhoi should also ensure that a copy of the crew and passenger manifest are kept on the ground, at the ground handling and operation service office, before each flight, says the NTSC.

The SSJ100 aircraft, with the serial number 95004 and tail number 97004, which crashed on 9 May was scheduled for a 30-minute demonstration flight. It had been due to take off from Jakarta's Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport before heading to Pelabuhan Ratu, an area in West Java, and then return to the airport.

Radar contact with the aircraft, however, was lost about 30 minutes after take-off, shortly after it requested to descend to 6,000ft (1,829m).

The aircraft wreckage was later found on a near-vertical mountainside on the eastern side of Mount Salak, at an elevation of about 6,100ft.

In its initial investigations, NTSC said it could not find a copy of the passenger manifest and aircraft documents, which were kept and carried on board by a staff who was also a passenger on the fatal flight.

The aircraft had also been certified by Russia's ministry of industry and trade to be safe for operations under the conditions that the aircraft would be maintained and operated according to regulations.

NTSC also confirms that both pilots operating the aircraft each held a valid test pilot licence issued by the Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, both the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been retrieved and Indonesian and Russian authorities have formally signed a cooperation agreement over the investigation.

None of the 45 people on board survived.

Sukhoi Superjet crash findings to be out in October

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) expects to release in October its investigation report detailing findings of the crash involving a prototype Sukhoi Superjet 100.

The committee is synchronising and analysing information from the aircraft's flight-data and cockpit-voice recorders and expects to meet with its Russian counterpart next month to discuss the findings, chief investigator Mardjono Siswosuwarno tells Flightglobal.

"Depending on our discussions with the Russians, it will determine when we finish. But hopefully we'll be able to publish the report end October," he adds.

Indonesia's Kartika Airlines, which has signed up for 30 Superjets, says there are no intentions to ditch the order, and that it is awaiting the NTSC's findings to ensure the aircraft is safe before it starts taking delivery.

The carrier's plans to relaunch operations, however, is in limbo as it awaits the NTSC's report.

Without any aircraft in its fleet, the carrier is unable to complete its air operator's certificate application, says commercial director Aditya Wardhana.

Kartika was originally scheduled to receive its first Superjet in December, with deliveries to follow through to 2015. It plans to use the aircraft to connect cities in East Indonesia.

Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that early conclusions suggest no problems with the crashed aircraft's engine and airframe.

"If the transport ministry says the aircraft is safe, we plan to operate 10 Superjets by next year. Right now, we cannot start operations because of the uncertainty in the situation," says Wardhana.

The carrier's contigency plan is to launch operations with a fleet of at least five ATR 42 and 72 turboprops. No decision has been made on whether the turboprops will be leased or bought.

While Indonesia's Sky Aviation, which has 12 Superjets on order, has not signalled any intentions to back out, cash-strapped Merpati Nusantara Airlines has said that it could cancel plans for 10 Superjets.

Crashed Superjet was cleared below minimum safe altitude

Preliminary findings from the Sukhoi Superjet 100 crash inquiry show that the aircraft had been cleared to descend below the minimum safe altitude for the area.

Sukhoi had intended to conduct a 30min demonstration flight from Halim to Pelabuhan Ratu at an altitude of 10,000ft.

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee states that air traffic control cleared the aircraft to depart runway 06 then, upon reaching 2,000ft, turn right to intercept the 200 radial from the Halim VOR beacon before climbing to 10,000ft.

After transferring to Jakarta approach control the crew was instructed to maintain this altitude. But two minutes later - and just 5min into the flight - the pilot requested descent to 6,000ft.

Indonesia's aeronautical information publication showed, however, that the minimum safe altitude was 6,900ft within 25nm of the Halim beacon.

The controller asked the pilot to repeat the descent request and, after he did so, acknowledged it. The pilot responded: "Descend to 6,000ft."

Two minutes later the pilot contacted Jakarta approach again, asking to make a right orbit, which was also approved at 6,000ft. The controller told investigators that, at the moment of this request, radar showed the aircraft was over a training zone at Atang Sanjaya about 17nm southwest of the Halim beacon.

But the aircraft was later found to have crashed into high terrain 28nm from the beacon, on the 198 radial. The impact site, on Mount Salak, was at a height of about 6,000ft.

The route selected for the flight was not a published airway, the inquiry points out, adding that the minimum off-route altitude was 13,200ft.

Weather information for the time of the accident - taken from a meteorological station about 7nm from the crash site - indicated a cloud base of about 2,000ft, with substantial cloud cover and cumulonimbus activity in the vicinity.

Investigators state that the flight-data recorder contains 22min of information from the flight, from engine start. But their preliminary findings have not detailed the operational status of the terrain-awareness and warning system or the various avionics and navigation systems on board the Superjet.

Neither pilot was found to have any traces of alcohol or drugs in their system. No distress signal was received by emergency services. The aircraft's emergency locator transmitter was found with its antenna detached.

None of the 45 occupants - comprising two pilots, a navigator, test-flight engineer and 41 passengers - survived the 9 May crash.

Hampson crisis 'won't leave 787 short of production tooling'

London trading of shares in Hampson was suspended earlier this week when the debt-burdened supplier of composite assembly tools to Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Gulfstream, Lockheed Martin and other airframers declared the end of attempts to sell the company and that it was unable to file its accounts for its year to end-March.

However, though its share price stood at less than a penny - down from an all-time high in excess of 200p ($3.13) in January 2008 - Hampson remains a going concern and insists it is still on track to fulfil a $53 million contract to supply Boeing with lightweight mandrel tools for carbonfibre lay-up for a "major commercial aerospace programme". This is likely to be the -9 variant of the 787.

Payment for that contract was originally expected within a year of its September 2010 signing, but owing to "issuesidentified during the testing and customer approval process" will not be fully realised until as late as March 2013.

Hampson complained in 2010-11 that profitability was being hit by "a consistent pattern of changes in customer scheduling requirements which resulted in higher subcontract and overtime costs being incurred".
Debt servicing and goodwill impairments have wiped out trading profits.

The company lost £31 million before taxes in its year to end-March 2011 and the same again in its half-year to end-September 2011.

Trouble began in 2008 with a $253 million acquisition of Michigan-based tooling makers Odyssey and Global Tooling. The move looked like a savvy bid to satisfy the growing demand for composite airframe tools until the global financial crisis and various aircraft programme delays left Hampson out on a financial limb.

Lenders have been helpful, but banks have not been willing to refinance the debt, which stands at some £55 million net, exacerbated by short-term borrowing to support the delayed Boeing tooling contract.

Hampson put itself up for sale in February but last week said there was no offer being discussed, though there were preliminary talks with a "third party" about the sale of the US operations. Shareholders will be left with nothing, according to Hampson.

United celebrates rollout of 787

United Airlines celebrated the rollout of its first Boeing 787-8 in the special "swoop" livery at the manufacturer's Everett, Washington plant on 2 August.

The Chicago-based carrier is the US launch customer for the type and will take delivery of the aircraft (N20904) in September. The 787 rolled out of the paint shop on 31 July.

"We have been awaiting this day for a while and it's worth every bit of the wait," says Dave Hilfman, senior vice-president of sales at United, during the ceremony. "It's going to be extraordinarily successful for United."

United will receive four 787-8s before the end of the year, according to the airline.

The carrier has firm orders for 36 787-8s and 14 787-9s, with options for 10 additional 787-8s and a letter of intent covering 50 of either variant, according to Flightglobal's Ascend Online database.

United will first fly the aircraft on domestic services before placing it on its existing route between Houston Intercontinental and Lagos, Nigeria.

The 787 will be used to launch a new service between Denver and Tokyo Narita in March 2013.

The airline intends to rotate the 787-8 through all of its domestic hubs that have a widebody service before it shifts to international operations, says Hilfman. This includes all of the airline's hubs except Cleveland.

United's 219-seat 787-8 has 36 fully lie-flat business-class seats in a two-two-two configuration, 72 economy plus seats and 111 economy seats in a three-three-three configuration.

All of the economy seats, supplied by BE Aerospace are a little more than 17in (43cm) wide while economy plus seats have at least 34in of pitch and economy seats 31in.

Panasonic provides the in-seat in-flight entertainment system on United's 787. Audio video on demand is available at each seat. Power outlets are located at each seat in the business-class cabin and there are two for every three seats in the main cabin except for in the bulkhead rows where there are three outlets.

The airline is working "aggressively" with Boeing to find an in-flight wi-fi solution for the 787, it says.

United executives repeatedly cite the positive impact of the 787’s lower cabin altitude on passenger comfort. Senior vice-president of marketing and distribution Mark Bergsrud describes the lower altitude compared to that of its rivals as the difference between being in Vail or Colorado Springs. Vail is at 2,445m (8,016ft) above sea level while Colorado Springs sits at 1,832m.

A380 wing-fix charges pass €180m in first half

Airbus has recorded total first-half charges of €181 million ($222 million) relating to fixing the cracking problem to wing-rib feet on in-service A380s.

The airframer disclosed the figure in parent company EADS's financial results for the first six months of 2012.

It adds that €23 million of these charges were attributable to the second quarter. A fix for the problem remains "under development", EADS says.

First-half earnings for Airbus of €548 million have already taken into account the A380 charges as well as the charges associated with a new delay to the A350 programme.

Airbus is aiming to deliver 580 commercial aircraft this year and is maintaining that these will include 30 A380s.

EADS and ST Aero finalise A330 conversion agreement

EADS and ST Aerospace have signed an agreement formalising their launch of an Airbus A330 passenger-to-freighter conversion programme.

Under the agreement, ST Aero will pay €110.5 million ($142 million) to subscribe to new shares in EADS EFW, the Dresden-based company that is also the main EADS passenger aircraft conversion facility.

This will give the Singapore-headquartered firm a 35% stake in EADS EFW, while EADS will hold the remaining 65%. EADS has an option to buy ST Aero's stake, and this can be triggered during the engineering development phase of the programme.

As part of the agreement, the EADS EFW facility in Dresden will also become ST Aero's European maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centre. This "fills a gap" in its global airframe MRO footprint, says ST Aero.

Plans for the conversion programme were first announced at the Singapore air show in February and further details of how the two companies will divide up the work has been revealed.

The engineering development phase is likely to begin by the end of 2012 and ST Aero will be the programme and technical lead at this stage, say the two companies. EADS EFW will drive sales and marketing activities, and lead the industrialisation phase.

"The larger A330-300P2F will be particularly suitable for integrators and express carriers thanks to its high volumetric payload capability with lower-density cargo," says ST Aero. "Complementing this will be the A330-200P2F, which will be optimised for higher-density freight and longer-range performance."

The conversions will mainly take place at in Dresden and the rest will take place at a ST Aero facility that will be decided at a later stage. ST Aero performs passenger-to-freighter conversions in the USA and Singapore, and also has a significant MRO presence in China.

Marketing efforts are underway and talks have begun with several potential launch customers, says a ST Aero spokeswoman.

Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar al-Baker confirmed last week that his airline is in talks with EFW about possibly converting some of its large fleet of A330 passenger aircraft into freighters.

The airline, however, is also talking to Boeing about a potential passenger-to-freight conversion deal for 777-200s even though it does not operate the aircraft type.

First A380s with line-fit wing-fix to be delivered in 2014

Airbus is expecting one-off charges to implement a retrofit solution to the A380 wing-rib cracking problem to reach €260 million ($330 million) over 2012.

The airframer's parent, EADS, revealed in its first-quarter results that it had already taken a €158 million charge relating to fixing 71 in-service A380s - a fix which, it says, is "more complex" than originally anticipated in March this year.

"This charge is now treated as a one-off since the anticipated retrofit costs go beyond the recurring warranty levels," it adds.

But the company is still expecting to deliver 30 A380s this year. EADS will continue to treat the matter on a one-off charge basis.

Based on the projected deliveries the total charge over the year, says EADS, could reach about €260 million.
The A380 delivery schedule for 2012 is "becoming more challenging" because the delivery pattern has become "more back-loaded", says EADS, admitting that it had expected to hand over more than the four A380s delivered in the first quarter.

EADS says the final wing-fix solution was finalised over the "last few days" and discussions are taking place with certification authorities.

Once the changes secure approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency, implementation of the retrofit will begin towards the end of this year with initial deliveries in 2013.

But while implementation of the line-fit solution will take place around the same time, the lead times mean that the first A380s with the line-fit fix will be delivered in 2014.

"Implementation in production of the final fix will temporarily generate headwind on the year-on-year A380 [earnings] improvement in 2012 and 2013 to account for non-recurring costs and delivery adjustments," says EADS.

"General discussions are on-going with customers. However, this should not jeopardise the reaching of [A380] break-even by the beginning of 2015."

A380 wing-cracks to require eight-week repair downtime

Airbus A380 operators face a 30,000 man-hour repair programme to address wing-crack issues that have dogged the airliner which will require an eight-week downtime if implemented in one instalment.

The European airframer confirms that if airlines choose to undertake the repair "nose-to-tail" it will require around eight weeks to implement. However Airbus says that it expects most operators would opt to adopt the phased approach spread out over three two-year heavy checks which is less disruptive. In this case, it expects the repair would extend each two-to-three week heavy check by "a few days".

Emirates, which is the biggest A380 operator with 21 in service, is undertaking the repair to each aircraft in one instalment. It says the work will require 30,000 man-hours to implement. The Emirates fleet will be repaired in Airbus facilities or by other organisations on Airbus's behalf because the Dubai carrier does not have the capacity to undertake the work in house.

A380s featuring the recently-introduced revised wing design incorporating more twist and a lighter structure will need to be modified slightly earlier as the wing-crack issue has "a slightly greater effect" on these wings.

The retrofit modification will be subject to an airworthiness directive from the European Aviation Safety Agency, which Airbus expects to be issued this summer. It will be available for retrofit in the first quarter of next year.

A modification for new-build aircraft will become available for incorporation on the wing production line at the end of this year. There is an approximately 10-month lead-time on the wing, meaning that this will apply to A380s delivered from early 2014.

Airbus says that it expects that most A380 operators receiving new A380s in 2013 will opt to have their wings repaired during final assembly, resulting in a four-to-six week delay. However some airlines with a more urgent need for their aircraft will decide to have the work carried out retrospectively, it adds.

British Airways A380 deliveries to be pushed back

British Airways is in talks with Airbus regarding delivery of its initial A380s, with the first arrival probably being put back until around the third quarter of 2013.

Airbus has already indicated that its deliveries of the type will dip next year as a result of its efforts to correct a cracking problem with wing-rib brackets.

BA has 12 A380s on order.

Parent company International Airlines Group's chief, Willie Walsh, says it is "in discussions" with Airbus regarding a delivery date.

Walsh says the deliveries will probably be pushed back, adding that the aircraft are still "likely" to arrive in 2013 but "towards the third quarter".

Airbus is developing a modification for the A380's wing, to resolve the problem, but the first aircraft to have this integrated into the production cycle will not be delivered until 2014.

SilkAir signs LOI for 31 Boeing 737-8s, 23 737-800s

Singapore Airlines' regional carrier SilkAir has signed a letter of intent to purchase up to 68 new Boeing aircraft for its growth and fleet renewal plans.

The agreement includes a firm order for 23 Boeing 737-800s and 31 Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft, and purchase rights for another 14 aircraft.

Under the deal, SilkAir also has the flexibility to switch its order to other variants of the 737 product range.
The firm order for the 54 aircraft is valued at $4.9 billion at list prices.

Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2014 and continue through to 2021, doubling the carrier's fleet. The deal also swings the carrier away from operating an all-Airbus fleet.

"The order is the largest in SilkAir's history and remains subject to the negotiations of a final purchase agreement," the carrier said in a statement listed on the Singapore Exchange.

"The selection of the B737 follows detailed evaluations and extensive negotiations with both Airbus and Boeing. The order will enable us to maintain a young and modern fleet, with an aircraft that has a proven track record of strong customer appeal, excellent reliability and low operating costs," said SilkAir chief executive Marvin Tan.

He adds that the new aircraft will allow SilkAir to expand its network and increase its capacity on existing routes.

SilkAir issued a request for proposals in early 2012, assessing both narrowbodies and regional jets. It now operates a fleet of 21 A319s and A320s, with three more A320s due for delivery by the end of 2013.

Many of the aircraft joined its fleet before or during the mid-2000s, according to Flightglobal's Ascend database.

Liverpool FC Declares Garuda Indonesia Official Airline Partner

Britain’s Liverpool announced on Thursday that it had inked a deal with Indonesian national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia making it the football club’s "Global Official Airline."

Liverpool said in a statement published on its website, liverpoolfc.com, on Thursday that the new “fantastic” partnership was set for three years and that Liverpool tapped the opportunity because of Indonesia’s “rapidly growing economy which the Club has great affiliation with and where we hope to hold next year’s pre-season tour.”

“Liverpool Football Club has a huge international following and we are looking forward to working with Garuda Indonesia across many markets in order to capitalize on their rapid growth,” Liverpool FC managing director Ian Ayre added.

“It is an honour for us to be associated with a brand that has become a leading player in global aviation, and in particular, a brand that has its base in a region where we enjoy such a passionate fan base,” he went on.

Garuda president director Emirsyah Satar, meanwhile, was quoted as saying in the same statement that the partnership was expected to provide Garuda with “great exposure in international markets,” given Liverpool’s huge fan base all over the world.

Emirsyah was in London on Thursday, also to attend the Farnborough International Airshow.

The announcement came following a filing at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) on Wednesday saying that Garuda signed a partnership with Liverpool and the Athletics Grounds Limited — a sports stadium in North Ireland — on June 9.

The agreement grants Garuda the titles of “Official Partner of Liverpool Football Club”  and the “Official Global Airline Partner of Liverpool Football Club."

Passengers Stranded in Pekanbaru Airport After Garuda Flight Skids Off Runway

Pekanbaru, Riau. Hundreds of passengers have been stranded following the cancellation of 19 flights from Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, after a Garuda Indonesia flight skidded off the runway on Tuesday, bringing all operations to a halt.

No one was injured in the incident, but the plane is still stranded next to the runway with crews working to remove it. The airport has reportedly allowed limited flight operations to commence.

Many passengers who were set to depart Tuesday night on various Batavia Air, Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air flights stayed overnight at the airport and slept on the floor — the airlines refused to pay for hotels.

“They’re deaf, even as we’re this noisy. No one from management has come to see us,” Samsulhari, a passenger, told Antara.

Other passengers complained that they weren’t even offered food, and insisted on staying at the airport until the airlines officially explained the situation.

“Lion [Air] has handled the crisis badly after Garuda skidded off,” said Fitri, a passenger who was supposed to leave for Jakarta on Tuesday night. “They’re not prepared at all. We will wait until there’s an explanation about a hotel, and about the next flight tomorrow.”

A district manager for Batavia Air said they refused to pay for hotels for their stranded passengers because the delay was not their responsibility.

“This is a Garuda incident which has impacted others, including placing other airlines in a difficult position,” Bachtiar, the Batavia district manager, said. “No hotel compensation will be given because it was not Batavia’s mistake. It might seem to be lacking in  humanity — we apologize, but it is our policy not to give hotel compensation.”

Bachtiar said that the passengers will be directed to other Batavia flights once the airport has been reopened.

Sriwijaya Air Station Manager Ahmad Bustomi also said that his airline could not provide compensation, but would forward complaints to airport management.

“For Sriwijaya passengers that canceled flights with us, we will fully refund the ticket,” Ahmad said.

A Lion Air manager also had a difficult time calming upset passengers after flights were canceled. Hundreds of passengers reportedly chased the manager, who was forced to hide inside an office.

The airport was been reopened on Wednesday morning after being closed for 17 hours, but with tight restrictions. Only 1,800 meters of the 2,600 meter runway is available, according to Anggono Raras, the General Manager of airport operator Angkasa Pura II.

“The flights can operate, but with certain conditions,” Anggono said. “The pilot must . . . reduce cargo or use smaller airplanes.”
Anggono said a small airplanes such as a Fokker 50 — which is capable of carrying 62 passengers — could use the runway.

But is not clear at this time if passengers are being flown out of Sultan Syarif Kasim II airport.

Anggono also said that the process of moving the Garuda plane was going slowly because the airline reportedly declined to use Angkasa Pura’s  equipment.

“Angkasa Pura has a special salvage jack, [because] we’re use to handling this kind of incident,” he said. “It happened three times in Pekanbaru, and [we] usually only need one to three hours to solve the problem. But Garuda insisted on doing it their way.”

Garuda finally used Angkasa Pura’s equipment at 2 a.m., ten hours after the plane skidded off the runway.

Garuda Indonesia Pekanbaru General Manager Suyano declined to answer reporter’s questions.

Garuda Indonesia Reviews Policy After Animal Activists Call for Boycott

Garuda Indonesia said it was reviewing its policy on transporting animals after more than 1,400 people signed petition to boycott the national carrier for allegedly mistreating animals.

“Garuda is committed to environment preservation, including dolphins,” Garuda Indonesia’s corporate secretary, Pudjobroto, said late on Sunday. “Garuda will review the policy on transporting live animals, including dolphins.”

The airline, which was just awarded ‘World’s Best Regional Airline’ by a British based airline service, was carrying two live dolphins on board a flight to Jakarta from Bali over the weekend.

“On Saturday, two dolphins used in the widely protested travel show in Kuta . . . left Denpasar on passenger Flight GA 411,” Femke den Haas, spokesman for the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, said on Sunday. “The dolphins traveled in small crates together with sea-lions and otters, all animals exploited in the travel show.”

Den Haas said Garuda should be responsible for the suffering and exploitation of what she called “blood dolphins,” because they transported them in small crates from Japan to Bali.

“These transports are extremely bad for the dolphins,” den Haas said. “Dolphins also suffer from stress during transport, the extreme sounds and the high chlorine content used in the small plastic pools and transport boxes in which they stay. This chlorine also blinds them.”

The petition was initiated by Barbara Napoles from Florida — besides calling for a boycott of Garuda, the petition also calls on the Indonesian government to put an end to dolphin shows.

Such a petition, which collected more than 6,500 signatures, successfully stopped Hong Kong Airlines from transporting dolphins after the airline admitted they shuttled five of the animals from Japan to Vietnam.

Dolphins are a protected animal in Indonesia, under the 1990 Law on the Protection of Biodiversity.

Garuda Indonesia Flight Skids Off Runway in Riau

A Garuda Indonesia flight skidded off the runway at Pekanbaru, Riau’s Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport as it landed in heavy rains Tuesday afternoon, an official said.

The airport ceased operations for hours Tuesday afternoon as crews and military personnel worked to evacuate the Boeing 737-800, general manager Anggono Laras said Tuesday evening.
“We’re still trying to evacuate the plane and have to temporarily cease flights until next announcement,” Anggono said.

Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya was among the passengers aboard the flight, which departed from Jakarta.

The plane skidded off the runway at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured.

The accident caused at least four flights to be diverted from Pekanbaru to neighboring airports, Anggono said.

Investigasi Sukhoi Diumumkan Tiga Bulan Lagi

Kartika airlines to use Sukhoi to expand in eastern Indonesia

Domestic carrier PT Kartika Airlines confirmed they would not cancel their order of 30 Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft despite the plane crash in May, which killed all passengers on board.

The airline’s commercial director Aditya Wardhana said the company planned to start taking delivery of the aircraft as soon as the Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) finished its investigation.

“This is not a delay nor a cancellation. We just need to know the results of the Sukhoi aircraft accident investigation before we operate the aircraft in Indonesia,” Aditya said on Tuesday.

A demonstration flight of the Russian jet went missing with 45 people on board near Mt. Salak in Bogor, West Java at 2:33 p.m. Jakarta time on May 9. A rescue helicopter discovered the wreckage of the missing airplane the following morning on a hillside of Mt. Salak at 5,500 feet above sea level.

Before the crash, Kartika Airlines was scheduled to receive its first Sukhoi planes in September.

The airline ordered the Sukhoi Superjet 100s through a contract with an estimated value of US$951 million in July 2010 at the Farnborough International Air Show in Farnborough, the United Kingdom.

The agreement marked Kartika Airlines as the first company in Southeast Asia to purchase the new Russian jets.

Continuing with its plan, the airline said the Sukhoi aircraft offered certain advantages.

“We are going to use these planes to connect cities in eastern Indonesia because they can land on a shorter runway,” he said.

Based on the company’s plans, the jets are expected to be delivered from the end of 2012 to 2015, and will serve a number of routes including Jayapura-Merauke, Jayapura-Timika and Ambon-Sorong.

Contacted separately, KNKT senior investigator Mardjono Siswosuwarno said that his team expected to finish the investigation by the end of October.

“We plan to finish the investigation by the end of October because the investigation process has been running smoothly,” Mardjono told The Jakarta Post.

Currently, KNKT investigators, assisted by airline psychologists and translators, are synchronizing the ill-fated aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

This work will allow the team to understand the conditions in the cockpit and problems the pilots had before the plane went missing.

“We hope we can finish this work within two weeks and after that we will send a draft to the Russian Sukhoi [company] and authorities for recommendations,” he said.

After receiving these recommendations, the KNKT would be able to announce the result of the investigation to the public, he said.

Besides Kartika Airlines, fast-growing Indonesian airline Sky Aviation ordered 12 Russian jets in a $380 million deal and expects to take delivery of the first three in October.

Unlike Kartika’s efforts to build its presence in the eastern Indonesia market, Sky Aviation plans to use the 100-seat aircraft to connect big cities in provinces and regencies in the western part of the country, flying routes such as Jakarta–Batam, Batam–Natuna, and Bandung–Batam.

UPDATE 3-ANA grounds Dreamliners, citing engine corrosion risk

* Five of airline's 11 Boeing 787 jets grounded
* Boeing says issue won't affect timing of deliveries
* Glitch related to corrosion risk in engine gearbox

TOKYO/LONDON, July 23 (Reuters) - Japan's All Nippon Airways said on Monday it grounded part of its fleet of 787 Dreamliners after tests revealed a risk of engine corrosion, but Boeing Co, the aircraft's manufacturer, said it does not expect the timing of deliveries of the jetliner to be affected.

The engines on the ANA planes, Trent 1000s, were supplied by Rolls-Royce, which said it was replacing a component on a number of its engines.

ANA, the launch customer for the 787, the world's first passenger jet built mainly from lightweight carbon fiber, said the action stemmed from a flawed process that could leave part of its UK-manufactured engines vulnerable to early corrosion.

The airline grounded five of its 11 Dreamliners, but three of the twinjet airplanes have been fixed and are flying again. The other two are waiting for parts from Rolls-Royce and could be out of action for a few weeks, an ANA spokesman said.

The glitch is the latest disruption to Boeing's flagship jet as the Chicago-based company recovers from a series of production delays that have come to typify the latest models being produced by Boeing and its European rival, Airbus .

"The extent of the issue with ANA appears relatively minor at this stage, given that (three) of the aircraft have already returned to service," said RBC Capital Markets analyst Rob Stallard in a note on the incident.

Alex Hamilton, managing director with boutique investment firm EarlyBirdCapital, said he didn't think Boeing share weakness was tied to the ANA announcement, as the broader market sold off.

"My guess is the problem is fixable," Hamilton said.

Shares of Rolls-Royce fell 2.7 percent, while Boeing was down 1.5 percent in afternoon trading in New York. Shares of General Electric Co, which offers an alternative engine for the 787, were up nearly 1 percent on Monday, outperforming the broader market.

The 787 engine problem involves a gearbox supplied by Hamilton Sundstrand, part of U.S. conglomerate United Technologies, but for now is contained to one batch.

Two people familiar with the matter said concerns over corrosion came to light during endurance testing in the UK on one of the Trent 1000 engines designed by Rolls-Royce.

During the ground test, corrosion was discovered on part of the gearbox used to drive ancillary systems. Investigators traced this to a new manufacturing process that was immediately reversed, the people said, asking not to be named.

Boeing said it was aware of the findings made by Rolls during engine testing that revealed the corrosion.
"We don't expect timing of any deliveries to be affected by this," Boeing's Scott Lefeber, a spokesman with 787 Communications, said by email.

"The replacement is expected to be complete in the days ahead," Boeing added in a statement. "No airplanes will be delivered with affected parts."

SUSPECT BATCH

Boeing said that currently, All Nippon is the only customer operating 787s with Rolls-Royce engines.
Of the 859 Dreamliners that have been ordered or delivered at this point, Rolls-Royce engines have been selected for about 228 planes, while General Electric engines have been chosen for 370 planes, according to Boeing data. Rolls spokesman Richard Hedges said by email there were 287 firm orders on hand for 787s with Trent 1000 engines.

"We have seen no such problems with our 787s. But we have found out that out of the eleven 787s we own, five of them are carrying those parts," Japan's ANA said in a statement. "For those five aircraft, we have switched them with other aircraft and are continuing to operate the flights."

A total of 17 engines contain gear boxes from the same suspect batch as the one used in the endurance test, eight of which have been delivered to ANA, industry sources said.

"We have identified that a component on Trent 1000 engines fitted to Boeing 787 Dreamliners has a reduced service life. As a proactive measure, this component is being replaced in a number of engines," a Rolls-Royce spokesman said.

United Tech's Hamilton Sundstrand arm said it was working with the other aerospace suppliers to solve the problem.

As of end-June, only Japanese carriers were operating the 787 Dreamliner, which entered service with ANA in October.

Japan Airlines, which has four Boeing 787s in its fleet, uses engines built by GE and therefore does not face problems similar to those affecting ANA, said Seiji Takaramoto, a Japan Airlines spokesman.

GLITCHES

The grounding the five Dreamliners by ANA is but one of several problems with aircraft that have delayed production and have come to typify flaws in new jetliners made by Boeing and Airbus.

In November, ANA reported a landing gear problem weeks after taking delivery of the first $194 million Dreamliner. [ID:nN1E7A60QX}

In March, Boeing disclosed delamination or stress in part of the 787's fuselage, forcing it to repair dozens of jets.

In June, ANA complained that the 787's electronic dimmable windows were not dark enough for long flights.
A blowout on a different type of Rolls-Royce engine on the Airbus A380 in November 2010 led to delivery bottlenecks for the world's largest passenger plane as engineers swapped dozens of engines on the
production line.

Rolls competes with GE to power both the A380 and the 787 Dreamliner.

Rolls-Royce to replace parts in some Boeing 787 Dreamliners
