Lion Air plans to buy five Boeing 787s

Indonesia's Lion Air plans to buy five 787 Dreamliners from Boeing, the airline and Boeing said Friday.
The airplanes would be the initial 787-8 version and go to Batik Air, Lion's newly launched premium carrier. The airplanes are worth $967.5 million at list prices, although airlines get steep discounts.

In a statement Friday, Boeing said it "congratulates Lion Air for selecting the 787 Dreamliner and looks forward to finalizing this order."

Boeing will add the airplanes to its order book once the deal is finalized. Without the five airplanes, the order book currently shows orders for 19 787s and cancellation of orders for 25 so far this year, and total orders for 854 787s.

Earlier this year, Lion Air finalized a record order with Boeing for 230 planes -- 201 re-engined 737 MAX jets and 29 737-900s -- worth $22.4 billion at list prices, plus rights for 150 more airplanes.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Airplane maker Boeing Co. said Friday that Indonesian carrier Lion Air has committed to ordering five of its 787s for the new Batik Air.

Boeing spokesman Wilson Chow says that the deal will be worth a total list price of $967.5 million when finalized.

The 787 order comes nearly four months after Lion Air placed an order with Boeing for 230 planes — worth a combined $22.4 billion. That deal is the largest commercial airplane order ever for Chicago-based Boeing by both dollar value and number of airplanes. The order includes 201 of Boeing's redesigned 737, which it calls the Max, and 29 extended range 737-900s.

Lion Air, a long-time Boeing customer, also has the rights to buy 150 planes under that order.
Lion Air was started by a travel agent and his brother, who pooled $850,000 to launch the carrier in 1999.
Shares of Boeing slipped 33 cents to $69.62 in afternoon trading.

US aerospace giant Boeing confirmed Friday a commitment from Indonesia's Lion Air to buy five 787-8 Dreamliners for its new subsidiary.

"Boeing confirms that Jakarta-based Lion Air announced a commitment to order 787 Dreamliners for its newly launched premium carrier Batik Air," the Chicago-based company said.

"Boeing congratulates Batik Air for selecting the 787 Dreamliner and looks forward to finalizing this order," it said in a brief statement that did not reveal details of the pending order.

A Boeing spokesman told AFP that the privately owned Lion Air planned to buy five 787-8s. At list prices, the deal is valued at $967.5 million.

Since the beginning of the year, Boeing has posted order cancellations for six Dreamliners. The first 787 delivery last September was three years behind schedule.

Built largely with lightweight composite materials, Boeing says the Dreamliner is about 20 percent more fuel efficient than similarly sized aircraft and is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes.
